Tata Motors’ Racemo Project is No More

Tata Motors has confirmed its decision to rule out the Racemo sportscar project as part of its major cost-reduction agenda . The decision was made on 24th of May 2018, at Tata Motors’ announcement of its FY2018 results.

“There are projects at this point of time that we think do not have economic value, for example we have stopped the TaMo Racemo, At a later point of time, if we find someone who can monetise the project for a better value, we will be more than happy to share it with them.” said PB Balaji, chief financial officer, Tata Motors.

The RaceMo was first showcased at the Geneva Motor Show 2017. The car came up with an advanced multi-material sandwich structure designed by Italian designer Marcello Gandini. The RaceMo was powered by a 1.2 litre, turbocharged petrol engine with a peak power of 190 hp and mated to a 6 speed AMT gearbox, which powered the rear wheels . Tata Motors had put a price tag of about Rs. 25 lakhs for the production version of the RaceMo then .

While Tata Motors has confirmed its decision to axe the Racemo sportscar project , Tata does have plans of bringing high performance affordable cars to Indian market . It has collaborated with Coimbatore-based engineering firm Jayem Automotive, to form a brand called JTP – Jayem Tata Performance. As part of their tie up already Two cars are set for launch from the JTP brand, called the Tiago JTP and Tigor JTP. Both cars are powered by 1.2 litre turbocharged petrol engines with 110 hp-150 Nm peak torque, mated to a 5 speed close ratio manual gearboxes. Stiffer suspension and sportier styling tweaks are expected on these sport packs.
