FY 2026 Electric Vehicle Retail Sales: A Watershed Year for India’s 2W and PV Markets

The financial year 2025-26 has proven to be a transformative period for India’s electric mobility landscape. According to the latest retail data released by the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA), the structural momentum behind India’s EV journey remains exceptionally robust. With an increasing shift towards sustainable transportation, consumer adoption has reached unprecedented levels across key segments.

Commenting on the industry’s performance, FADA President Mr. C S Vigneshwar highlighted that the total EV retail across all categories stood at approximately 24.52 lakh units, growing nearly 24.6% year-on-year. He noted that this milestone is not merely an automobile industry achievement but a testament to India’s capacity to lead a mass-market energy transition.

This comprehensive analysis focuses on the two primary pillars of personal electric mobility in India: Electric Two-Wheelers (2W) and Electric Passenger Vehicles (PV).

Electric Two-Wheeler (2W) Market: Crossing the 14 Lakh Milestone

The Electric Two-Wheeler segment is undeniably the volume driver of India’s EV revolution. In FY 2026, the segment crossed the monumental 14 lakh mark, recording a total retail volume of 14,01,818 units. This represents a solid 21.81% year-on-year growth compared to the 11,50,790 units sold in FY 2025.

Furthermore, the overall EV market share in the two-wheeler segment rose to 6.5% for the financial year. The momentum accelerated dramatically toward the end of the year, with March 2026 alone clocking a record 9.79% monthly market share for electric two-wheelers.

Top Performers in the Electric 2W Segment

The competitive landscape in the electric two-wheeler market has seen significant shifts, with legacy manufacturers firmly establishing their dominance alongside key pure-play EV startups.

  • The Undisputed Leader – TVS Motor Company Ltd: TVS emerged as the best-performing OEM in the electric two-wheeler space for FY 2026. The company recorded an impressive 3,41,513 unit sales, securing a massive 43.54% year-on-year growth from the previous year’s 2,37,929 units.
  • Bajaj Auto Ltd: Securing the second position, Bajaj Auto demonstrated strong consumer demand with 2,89,349 units retailed, marking a 25.17% growth over FY 2025.
  • Ather Energy Ltd: Ather Energy maintained excellent upward momentum, retailing 2,39,178 units. This reflects a staggering 82.34% year-on-year growth, solidifying its position as a premium electric scooter manufacturer.
  • Ola Electric Technologies Pvt Ltd: In a surprising turn of market dynamics, Ola Electric experienced a sharp decline. Retail sales dropped by 52.28%, falling from 3,44,300 units in FY 2025 to 1,64,295 units in FY 2026.
  • Hero MotoCorp Ltd: Hero MotoCorp showcased phenomenal aggressive growth, jumping 196.13% year-on-year to register 1,44,330 units, indicating rapid scaling of their EV operations.

Other notable performers included River Mobility Pvt Ltd, which recorded an exponential 426.35% growth (22,354 units), and E-Sprinto Green Energy, which surged by a massive 792.97% (12,582 units).

Electric Passenger Vehicle (PV) Market: Nearing the 2 Lakh Mark

While electric two-wheelers drive the volume, the Electric Passenger Vehicle segment reflects the evolving aspirations of Indian families adopting green technology. The Electric PV segment witnessed an explosive surge of 83.63% in FY 2026, touching a total retail volume of 1,99,923 units—bringing it within a whisker of the highly anticipated 2-lakh milestone. This is a massive leap from the 1,08,873 units recorded in FY 2025.

Top Performers in the Electric PV Segment

The electric four-wheeler market in India remains highly consolidated at the top, though new entrants and legacy giants are rapidly expanding their portfolios to capture market share.

  • The Market Champion – Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles Ltd: Tata Motors continues its undisputed reign in the electric car segment. The automaker retailed 78,811 units in FY 2026, reflecting a steady 35.90% growth over the 57,994 units sold in the previous financial year. Their diverse portfolio continues to resonate strongly with Indian buyers.
  • JSW MG Motor India Pvt Ltd: Retaining a strong second place, MG Motor saw a formidable 73.67% increase in sales, jumping from 30,569 units in FY 2025 to 53,089 units in FY 2026.
  • Mahindra & Mahindra Limited: Mahindra delivered the most dramatic volume growth among the top manufacturers. Sales skyrocketed by an extraordinary 407.01%, moving from 8,426 units in FY 2025 to 42,721 units in FY 2026. This indicates the massive success of their newer electric SUV offerings.
  • Hyundai Motor India Ltd & BYD India: Hyundai achieved a commendable 137.59% growth with 5,885 units. Close behind, BYD India registered 5,361 units, growing by 54.01% as they expand their footprint in the premium electric segment.
  • Kia India Private Limited: Kia registered the highest percentage growth in the PV category, soaring by 794.26% to 3,738 units.

The data also highlighted the entry of global players like VinFast Auto India Pvt Ltd and Tesla India Motors and Energy Pvt Ltd, registering 2,390 and 342 units respectively in their debut year in the FADA retail charts.

A Structural Shift in Indian Mobility

The FY 2026 retail figures released by FADA paint a clear picture: the Indian consumer is ready and willing to embrace electric mobility. The transition is no longer limited to early adopters; it has fundamentally penetrated the mass market.

The success of legacy brands like TVS and Tata Motors, combined with the exponential growth of Mahindra and the steadfast performance of Ather and MG Motor, shows a maturing market. Consumers are placing their trust in brands that offer reliable after-sales service, robust build quality, and expanding charging networks. As FADA rightfully pointed out, the journey from the family car to the daily commuter scooter is becoming increasingly electric, setting a strong foundation for FY 2027 and beyond.
