Defender Dakar D7X-R Revealed: Ready for the 2026 Dakar Rally

In a bold move that underscores its off-road heritage, Defender Rally has officially unveiled the all-new Defender Dakar D7X-R. This competition-ready vehicle is set to make its competitive debut at the grueling Dakar Rally in January, marking the start of a full campaign in the 2026 World Rally-Raid Championship (W2RC).

Derived from the most powerful production Defender ever built—the Defender OCTA—the D7X-R is engineered to compete in the “Stock” category of the W2RC. This category is designed to showcase the inherent capabilities of production vehicles, restricting significant changes to key elements like the body architecture, engine, and gearbox.

Engineered for the Extreme

The Defender Dakar D7X-R retains the core DNA of the production model while undergoing essential modifications to withstand the punishing conditions of rally-raid competition. It keeps the tough D7x body architecture, the sophisticated transmission and driveline, and the potent 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 engine.

To meet the demands of the desert, the vehicle runs on advanced sustainable fuel. It has also been enhanced with a wider track, increased ride height, and upgraded cooling systems. A significant addition to the engineering team is BILSTEIN, which has joined as the Official Shock Absorber Partner, bringing decades of suspension expertise to ensure the D7X-R can handle the world’s toughest terrains.

Technical Specifications and Dimensions

The transition from a road-going SUV to a rally-raid competitor involves critical dimensional changes to improve stability and clearance. Below is the detailed comparison between the standard Defender 110, the high-performance Defender OCTA, and the new Defender Dakar D7X-R.

As the table highlights, the Dakar D7X-R sits significantly higher with a ground clearance of 370 mm, nearly 50 mm more than the OCTA. The widened track (1,832 mm front / 1,828 mm rear) provides the necessary stability for high-speed desert crossings.
