Tata Motors, the leading automobile manufacturer in India, and Uber, India’s top ridesharing app, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to introduce 25,000 XPRES-T electric vehicles (EVs) to Uber’s premium category service. This partnership is in line with Tata Motors’ commitment to creating a cleaner and greener environment. The company will aid Uber in electrifying their services across major cities in India such as Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Hyderabad, Bengaluru, and Ahmedabad. The deliveries of the electric cars to Uber fleet partners will begin this month in a phased manner.
Tata Motors’ commitment to sustainable mobility
Mr. Shailesh Chandra, MD, Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles and Tata Passenger Electric Mobility, expressed his delight in partnering with Uber to accelerate the adoption of green and clean personal ride-sharing in India. The XPRES-T EV is an attractive option for both customers and operators as it offers enhanced safety, silent and premium in-cabin experience. It has a fast-charging solution, driving comfort, and cost-effectiveness that makes it an attractive business proposition for fleet partners. This partnership will further cement Tata Motors’ market position in the fleet segment.
Uber’s commitment to sustainable mobility
Mr. Prabhjeet Singh, President, Uber India and South Asia, commented on the partnership, stating that Uber is committed to bringing sustainable, shared mobility to India. This partnership represents the largest EV partnership yet between an automaker and a ridesharing platform in India, and it will accelerate the transition to zero-emissions on the Uber platform as the company works towards building a sustainable future. Uber has committed to 100% of rides taking place in zero-emission vehicles, on public transit, or with micro-mobility by 2040.
The XPRES-T electric sedan
In July 2021, Tata Motors launched the ‘XPRES’ brand exclusively for fleet customers, and the XPRES-T EV is the first vehicle under this brand. The new electric sedan comes with two range options of 315km and 277km (ARAI certified range under test conditions). It packs a high energy density battery of 26 kWh and 25.5 kWh and can be charged from 0-80% in 59 mins and 110 mins respectively using fast charging. It can also be normally charged from any 15 A plug point, which is easily available and convenient. The car comes with zero tailpipe emission, single speed automatic transmission, dual airbags, and ABS with EBD as standard across all variants. The premium interiors with standard automatic climate control and Electric Blue accents across its interior and exterior differentiate it from other Tata cars.
The partnership between Tata Motors and Uber represents a major milestone towards sustainable mobility in India. The introduction of 25,000 XPRES-T EVs in Uber’s premium category service will accelerate the adoption of green and clean personal ride-sharing. This partnership will further cement Tata Motors’ market position in the fleet segment and supercharge the transition to zero-emissions on the Uber platform.
