Audi Enters Supercar Segment with 1,001 PS Nuvolari Hybrid

AUDI AG has officially unveiled the Audi Nuvolari, marking the brand’s first foray into the supercar segment featuring a high-performance hybrid powertrain. Engineered as the fastest and most powerful production vehicle in the company’s history, the Nuvolari represents a direct transfer of motorsport engineering to the road as Audi prepares for its factory team entry into Formula 1. Production of the vehicle will be strictly limited to 499 units globally, with customer deliveries scheduled to commence in the first half of 2027.

High-Performance Hybrid Powertrain Architecture

The propulsion system of the Audi Nuvolari delivers a maximum collective output of 736 kW (1,001 PS) through four distinct drive units. The internal combustion core consists of a mid-mounted 4.0-liter V8 biturbo engine that generates 588 kW (800 hp) and operates at up to 10,000 rpm. This combustion engine produces a peak torque of 730 Nm.

The electrical architecture incorporates a 7.3 kWh gross capacity lithium-ion battery paired with three axial flux electric motors:

  • Two oil-cooled axial flux motors are positioned on the front axle, generating up to 2,150 Nm of torque and enabling fully variable torque vectoring.
  • A third axial flux electric motor is integrated between the V8 mid-engine and the transmission to complete the hybrid configuration.

This system accelerates the near-production prototype from 0 to 100 km/h in 2.6 seconds, reaches 200 km/h in 6.8 seconds, and achieves a top speed exceeding 350 km/h.

Motorsport-Derived Chassis and Active Aerodynamics

The structural foundation of the vehicle debuts the new Audi Space Frame (ASF) combined with a full carbon fiber exterior. Developed utilizing Formula 1 technical expertise, the carbon fiber components are manufactured using prepreg autoclave technology, where manual layup processes cure the material under high pressure and temperature to optimize torsional rigidity and minimize weight. The vehicle also marks the debut of forged center-lock wheels within Audi’s production portfolio.

Aerodynamic performance is managed via an active system designed to balance downforce and drag across changing driving states. Key elements include:

  • S-Duct Layout: A vented front end that channels airflow to generate downforce at the front axle while optimizing thermal management for the powertrain and braking components.
  • Adaptive Rear Wing: A deployable element featuring an integrated solid-metal Audi ring design that operates across three specific configurations: Closed, Low Downforce (LD), and High Downforce (HD).
  • Drag Reduction System (DRS): A manual, steering-wheel-activated function that lowers the wing on straightaways to minimize drag and maximize velocity. In its peak high-downforce configuration, the system generates over 400 kg of downforce.

Next-Generation Vehicle Dynamics and Braking

The Nuvolari introduces “quattro predictive ride,” an advanced evolution of Audi’s all-wheel-drive technology. By processing real-time sensor inputs—including steering angle, acceleration, yaw rate, and available surface grip—the control system proactively adjusts longitudinal and lateral torque distribution before traction loss occurs.

Drivers can modulate vehicle behavior via steering-wheel rotary controls across four primary modes: E-Hybrid (fully electric driving), Balanced, Dynamic, and Dynamic+. A specialized Track Mode allows manual adjustments to the traction control system, ranging from Wet to Traction Control Off (TC Off).

The braking infrastructure utilizes a brake-by-wire system that decouples the pedal from direct hydraulic application, blending hydraulic stopping power with up to 0.3g of purely electric recuperative deceleration. The Audi Ceramic Pro system features 10-piston fixed calipers with 420×40 mm discs at the front axle and 4-piston calipers with 410×32 mm discs at the rear. The long-fiber carbon structure of the discs increases heat dissipation by up to 21 percent compared to standard carbon-ceramic systems, allowing the assembly to manage energy absorption loads up to 2.8 megawatts.

Driver-Centric Interior Concept and Technical Authority

The interior layout splits the cabin into two functional zones: a dark-toned front section optimized for driver focus and a lighter “Shadow Dune” rear section. Lightweight carbon fiber structure seats provide lateral support, while the digital human-machine interface (HMI) incorporates color accents inspired by the historic Auto Union Type C race cars of the 1930s.

As part of the broader Audi Group—which includes Lamborghini, Bentley, and Ducati—AUDI AG has leveraged its global network of 21 production sites to rapidly bring this vehicle from concept to prototype.

“With the Audi Nuvolari, we are accelerating technological progress,” stated Gernot Döllner, Chairman of the Board of Management of AUDI AG. “It shows what is possible when the focus is on technology, performance, and execution through teamwork and when we achieve progress together.”

Key Technical Takeaways

  • Production Framework: Limited to 499 units globally, with deliveries starting in H1 2027.
  • Powertrain Metrics: 1,001 PS total system output combining a 4.0L V8 biturbo and three electric motors.
  • Efficiency and Emissions: Combined fuel consumption is rated at a preliminary 11.3 l/100 km (14.7 l/100 km with a discharged battery), with preliminary combined CO2 emissions at 270 g/km.
  • Advanced Architecture: First Audi production vehicle utilizing a carbon fiber exterior over an Audi Space Frame with F1 prepreg autoclave construction.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What are the performance specifications and production volume of the Audi Nuvolari?

The Audi Nuvolari produces a combined 1,001 PS (736 kW), accelerating from 0 to 100 km/h in 2.6 seconds and 0 to 200 km/h in 6.8 seconds, with a top speed exceeding 350 km/h. Global production is strictly limited to 499 units.

How does the hybrid system distribute power across the axles?

The powertrain integrates a mid-mounted 800 hp 4.0-liter V8 biturbo engine and three axial flux electric motors. Two oil-cooled electric motors drive the front axle, delivering up to 2,150 Nm of torque for variable torque vectoring, while the third electric motor is positioned between the V8 engine and the transmission.

What Formula 1 technologies have been transferred to this production model?

The vehicle incorporates a carbon fiber exterior developed via motorsport prepreg autoclave processes, active aerodynamics featuring a front S-duct, a manual Drag Reduction System (DRS) built into the adaptive rear wing, and a 2.8-megawatt capacity brake-by-wire system derived from F1 cooling designs.
