Tata Punch Flex Fuel Launch Expected by Early 2027: Everything We Know So Far

The automotive landscape in India is undergoing a rapid transformation, driven by a strong push toward cleaner and more sustainable alternative fuels. One of the most highly anticipated developments in this space is the introduction of mass-market flex-fuel vehicles. Tata Motors has officially outlined its intentions in this segment, indicating that a Tata flex fuel car launch by early 2027 is highly probable, and the Punch SUV could be the first in line.

India Advances Its Ethanol Blending Targets

The Indian government has been actively accelerating its ethanol blending program to reduce dependence on imported fossil fuels and lower vehicular emissions. In a major milestone, India has achieved nationwide availability of E20 (20% ethanol-blended petrol) fuel from April 1, 2026. Remarkably, this nationwide rollout was completed well ahead of the original 2030 target.

Moving Beyond E20: The Push for E85 and E100

With E20 now widely accessible across the country, the government is setting its sights on even higher ethanol blends. The government is now pushing higher ethanol blends such as E85 and E100. To facilitate this transition at a regulatory level, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has already issued a draft notification this year to formally include these fuels under vehicle regulations.

Tata Motors Confirms Flex Fuel Vehicle Plans

Despite the clear government mandate and changing regulations, the flex-fuel market is at a very early stage in India, with no availability of mass-market flex-fuel cars on sale. While several carmakers have showcased their flex-fuel prototypes, however, their commercial launches are yet to take place.

Tata Motors is poised to change this narrative. Moving forward in this direction, Tata Motors has confirmed its plan to launch the brand’s first flex-fuel model by the end of 2026 or early 2027.

During an interview with ET Auto, Shailesh Chandra, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles stated, “By the end of this year or early next year, we should be ready with our flex fuel also, one product at least”.

Technological Readiness of Tata Powertrains

Preparing a vehicle for high ethanol blends requires significant engineering foresight. He further added that Tata Motors has already upgraded its powertrains to meet E20-blended fuel standards and is now technologically prepared to introduce flex-fuel products in the market.

Tata Punch: The Probable First Flex Fuel SUV

While Tata Motors has a diverse portfolio of passenger vehicles, industry expectations point toward one specific model leading the alternative fuel charge. The Tata Punch could be the brand’s first flex-fuel vehicle in the country.

Concept Showcase and E85 Compliance

For people not in the know, the carmaker showcased the Tata Punch flex fuel at the last year’s Bharat Mobility Show. This demonstration gave the public a glimpse into the company’s alternative fuel engineering. The concept model was E85 compliant, which means it can run on petrol containing up to 85 percent ethanol.

Engine Specifications and Mechanical Modifications

At its core, the Tata Punch flex fuel features the same 1.2L, three-cylinder naturally aspirated petrol engine that powers the regular Punch.

However, running on high ethanol blends like E85 requires specialized components to prevent long-term corrosion and manage the distinct combustion characteristics of the fuel. The flex-fuel compliant version receives several mechanical modifications. These structural upgrades include:

  • Revised Fuel Injector Systems: Engineered to efficiently manage the delivery of the high-ethanol fuel blend into the engine cylinders.
  • Recalibrated ECU: The engine control unit is modified to optimize performance depending on the specific blend being used.
  • Updated Exhaust After-Treatment System: A specialized system built to detect ethanol content and adjust to varying fuel blends for optimal emissions control.
