The brand Yamaha knows exactly what Indian motorheads need at the moment. The company has strengthened its 150cc motorcycle portfolio by introducing FZ-X what it calls a “Neo-retro” motorcycle. We got an opportunity to experience the all new FZ-X motorcycle in Bengaluru and what follows below is a detailed review of the bike.

How does it look?

The main highlight of this motorcycle is its sliced round headlight design which is powered by Class-D Bi-functional LED – it looks very very interesting from the front. When it comes to overall looks, the motorcycle’s DNA is its retro styling which is coupled well with sporty racing stickers around the tank. If you ask me, the FZ-X is something fresh, and breaks all the conventional rules.

The fuel tank is big and nice and it is not a tall motorcycle, so accessibility is easy for short riders. The motorcycle which we got for review was dressed in Metal Blue color (Check all FZ-X Colors) – it is a very good looker and it contrasts well with the orange-brown pillion seats. It is slightly disproportionate, but the motorcycle does look good from side profile angle as well. What makes this motorcycle modern is the presence of fully digital instrument cluster which is well readable and bundles itself with bluetooth related connectivity functionalities. The rear tail lamps are simple and LED based.

What is inside? (Specs)

The motorcycle is powered by 4-stroke 2-valve 149cc SOHC engine which delivers maximum power output of 12.4 PS at 7250 rpm and has max torque of 13.3 Nm at 5500 rpm. Both tyres gets Disc brakes with single channel ABS. At the front, the motorcycle gets telescopic fork suspension with fork boot and at the rear, the motorcycle offers 7-step adjustable monocross suspension.

The motorcycle is also equipped with some essential features like power socket, ECO Indicator and side-stand engine cut-off switch. Although the fuel tank aesthetically looks big, the tank capacity is just 10 litres. The motorcycle weighs less (just 139 Kgs) and has a ground clearance of 165mm. The seat height is 810mm which is very good for short riders. The motorcycle has a wheelbase of 1330 mm and measures 2020 mm in length, 785mm in width and 1115 mm in height.

How does it sound?

The motorcycle sounds too good – be it the ignition sound when you start and the noise of engine when you are cruising – it sounds pretty gentle and refined. The exhaust noise is amazing, every single time you shift the gear upwards from 0 to 80 Kmph. The sound adds more power psychologically.

How does it ride?

The riding posture is very ergonomical in FZ-X, it helps you ride further and aligns you well with the force. I made a very long trip from Bengaluru city to foot hills of Nandi hills (about 70 Kms) – I didn’t experience any stress on my body – It was all just perfect and easy. Even with a person in the pillion seat, the motorcycle rides very confidently. The handling is easy and you get a good grip on the motorcycle at any speed. I just felt, the brakes could have been more better – it does get single-channel ABS.

The best part of riding a 150cc motorcycle in times like this is it saves you tonnes of money on fuel. I am truly impressed with the fuel efficiency offered on this motorcycle. It was hard for me to empty even half a fuel tank even post crossing 220 odd kilo meters on odometer. Thank you team Yamaha, for building such an amazing motorcycle which consumes so little fuel. The mileage which I got on highways was about 50-55 Kmpl and in city it was about 50 Kmpl. I still cannot believe how a sporty, powerful motorcycle like FZ-X can clock such amazing mileage numbers.

The suspensions were good too, was easily able to maneuver over uneven potholes. It is good that this motorcycle comes with under-cowl support – during couple of occasions the motorcycle floor hit the large humps brushing it – but that is alright considering my whole journey was smooth other than 2 spots. Ah well, it feels like riding again!

Should you buy?

Yes Yamaha! It is a big Yes from us – If you are in the market for 150cc motorcycle and are looking for a stylish motorcycle with Neo-classic look, FZ-X is definitely a great choice. Firstly, because of the sporty and retro nature of the motorcycle. Secondly, the looks and appearance is fresh and you definitely stand out from others (be it the round headlamps, sporty fuel tank). Thirdly, pure riding joy and for the exhaust sound which it makes. Fourthly and finally, it is very very fuel efficient than any other 150cc motorcycle in the segment. Go for it! The ex-showroom Bangalore price of Yamaha FZ-X is Rs 1.16 lakhs and the one with bluetooth connectivity features costs you Rs 1.21 lakhs.

What do you think of this motorcycle? Let us know in the comments section.
