Indian Auto Retail Achieves Record-Breaking Sales in February 2026

The Indian automobile retail sector reached a historic milestone in February 2026, recording its best-ever February performance across nearly all vehicle categories. Overall vehicle retail sales reached 24,09,362 units, representing a significant year-on-year (YoY) growth of 25.62% compared to February 2025. This robust performance is largely attributed to the positive tailwinds from GST 2.0, strong rural demand, and improved market confidence.

Segment-Wise Performance Analysis

The growth in February 2026 was broad-based, with five out of six major categories setting new February retail records.

  • Two-Wheelers (2W): Retails reached 17,00,505 units, marking a 25.02% YoY increase. Growth was driven by improved rural liquidity, marriage season demand, and attractive marketing schemes.
  • Passenger Vehicles (PV): The segment recorded 3,94,768 units, a growth of 26.12% YoY. While SUVs continue to lead, a sharp 34.21% surge in rural demand has also supported small car sales.
  • Commercial Vehicles (CV): Sales stood at 1,00,820 units, up 28.89% YoY. This momentum was fueled by infrastructure projects, e-commerce activity, and steady freight movement.
  • Three-Wheelers (3W): This category saw 1,17,130 units sold, reflecting a 24.39% YoY growth.
  • Tractors: Emerging as the fastest-growing segment, tractor retails surged by 36.35% YoY to reach 89,418 units.
  • Construction Equipment (CE): This was the only segment to witness a marginal decline, falling 1.22% YoY to 6,721 units.

Key Market Trends and Inventory Levels

One of the most positive signals for the industry is the continued reduction in Passenger Vehicle inventory. Levels have dropped to 27-29 days, moving closer to the FADA-recommended 21-day benchmark. This indicates a healthier alignment between wholesale dispatches from manufacturers and actual retail demand.

Rural vs. Urban Growth: In the PV segment, rural markets (+34.21% YoY) significantly outpaced urban growth (+21.12% YoY). Conversely, in the 2W segment, urban growth (+28.96% YoY) was higher than rural growth (+22.16% YoY).

Future Outlook: March 2026 and Beyond

The near-term outlook for March 2026 is cautiously optimistic. Approximately 75.51% of dealers expect growth, supported by the financial year-end buying cycle and a confluence of festivals including Navratri, Ramzan, and Gudi Padwa.

Looking at the three-month horizon (March to May 2026), dealer sentiment remains positive but measured. About 67.35% of dealers expect growth, suggesting the market may be transitioning from a sharp rebound phase to a more stable and calibrated growth phase.
