As India gears up for hosting the first ever FIFA tournament, SIAM – the apex body of the automobile industry in the country – held a two-day free pollution check-up camp for vehicles to ensure a cleaner air in Delhi and NCR.

This was in response to a call by Ministry of Environment & Forests (MoEF), Government of India, to engage all stakeholders to check pollution levels in NCR during these days.

The drive was organised across 134 service centres of various automobile manufacturers on 3rd and 4th October 2017. The primary focus of the drive was to ensure that there is a minimal impact of vehicular pollution during these critical days and was to make awareness to general public about keeping air pollution under control through regular vehicular checks and ensure a cleaner environment for everyone.

Indian automobile industry has always been at a forefront to safeguard the environment. With support from SIAM member companies, this initiative is expected to encourage vehicle users to ensuring proper maintenance of their vehicles. It is a matter of national pride that India is hosting a FIFA tournament and the automobile industry took up the opportunity to create awareness towards a cleaner environment.

In the past also, SIAM along with its member companies has conducted free PUC check drives across the country. Every year during Diwali, the air quality gets worse due to toxic gases from fire crackers. As a pro-active measure from the automobile industry, SIAM organised the camp in the National Capital Region (NCR) so that the contribution of vehicle pollution is kept minimum during these days, when there are vastly increased pollution levels from various other sources eg. Biomass burning, firecrackers etc. Another round of check-up camp will be conducted in Delhi-NCR before Diwali on 16th and 17th October 2017.
