Tata Nexon iCNG Review

Tata Motors has been busy closing each gap in our market and the best example is the Nexon which comes with petrol, diesel, electric and now CNG. The iCNG range now adds the Nexon which is the most expensive CNG car as it comes even in the top end trims. Just like the Altroz and the other CNG cars, the iCNG gets the dual cylinder technology which means two 30l tanks being placed conveniently under the boot floor. That means boot space is not affected and is just 61 litres less.

You also get a start in CNG mode which means petrol is not spent. Power is down by 20bhp but torque remains the same as in petrol. There is a CNG mode button on the black touch panel which you can use to switch Between petrol and CNG. There are also CNG related graphics while it switches to petrol on the digital instrument cluster.

There are some vibrations but it gets smoother on the go. The manual gearbox is a relatively easy to use but the gear lever could have been better designed. In CNG mode power is ample and it does not get short of breath. You can easily cruise or drive at traffic speeds. Despite the added weight, the driving experience is also nearly the same as the Nexon petrol. Efficiency is around 24km per kg but different conditions will give less mileage. On the outside the Nexon CNG has new blue/white dual tone colour scheme which looks nice while there is a iCNG badge at the back.

Buyers would be surprised as the interior now has a full panoramic sunroof like also on the XUV 3XO while this makes the all black cabin a lot more spacious. You can buy the top-end Nexon with CNG which means all of the features including a digital instrument cluster and a 10.25 inch touchscreen plus even cooled seats along with a 360 degree view camera. Starting at just under 9 lakh, the Nexon CNG is one lakh more than the petrol variant so it is for buyers who drive a lot to make up the extra difference.

We think CNG has greater acceptance now with more CNG stations but you still need to wait for filling up while for those who have a higher running, it could be a good option.
