Yamaha FZ  has been ruling the 150 cc segment category since the time it was launched. Its hard to find a negative after riding one and that’s how good the FZ is. Here, to compete with the FZ is the Suzuki Gixxer. 150 cc segment being preferred by most young people today have real confusion choosing between the two.  FZ has been around for a while and the Gixxer has just arrived and does the Gixxer hold up to the FZ? Here’s the spec comparison of both the motorcycles.

Yamaha FZ vs Suzuki Gixxer: Design and Features

Muscular is what the FZ says when you look at it. Huge tank, handsome headlight, wide tyres, split seats is what gets you when you look at the FZ. Neat Yamaha logo on the side cover and the sharp edgy design adds to the looks of the FZ. FZ gets a steel plated exhaust with sharp edges adding to the sportiness of the bike. The FZ now gets an all digital instrument cluster with an RPM meter and an ECO mode.

Gixxer on the other hand looks similar to the FZ with subtle changes to it. The exhaust is a double barrel type with a futuristic cover. Tank looks muscular and the handlebar is set upright compared to the FZ. Gixxer gets a kick start while the FZ doesn’t. The instrument cluster on the Gixxer is neat and my favorite. It looks like a play station portable and has an RPM meter, speedo, trip meter, fuel level indicator and more.

Yamaha FZ vs Suzuki Gixxer: Engine and Transmission

Yamaha has a 149 cc fuel injected, single cylinder, air cooled engine which makes 13.1 bhp and 12.8 Nm of torque. The engine being fuel injected aids in higher fuel economy and a well refined engine. The power is transferred through a constant mesh, 5 speed gearbox.

Yamaha FZ vs Suzuki Gixxer

Gixxer’s has a slightly higher capacity engine which is a 154.9 cc single cylinder, air cooled petrol engine. This engine is not fuel injected which gives FZ the advantage of having higher efficiency and a more refined engine. Although, the powerful engine of the two here is the Gixxer making 14.8 bhp and 14 Nm of torque and power delivered through a 5- speed gearbox.

Yamaha FZ vs Suzuki Gixxer: Dimensions

FZ comes with a length of 1990 mm with a width of 770 mm and a seat height of 790 mm. The ground clearance of the FZ is 160 mm which is quite good for Indian roads. The motorcycle weighs at 132 kgs and has a fuel tank capacity of 12 litres.

Yamaha FZ Dimensions vs Suzuki Gixxer Dimensions

Gixxer shares the same numbers for ground clearance and the fuel tank capacity while the seat height is 10 mm lesser being at 780 mm and the bike weighing 135 kgs, 3 kgs more than the FZ. Overall length comes is 2050 mm with a width of 785 mm.

Yamaha FZ vs Suzuki Gixxer: Brakes and Suspension

Suzuki Gixxer Photo

Yamaha FZ does not come with a rear disc brake  which makes this a disadvantage compared to the Gixxer. It gets a 267 mm hydraulic disc up front and mechanical drum in the rear. Front suspension is a telescopic fork type and gets a mono-shock in the rear.

Gixxer’s braking is done by a 266 mm disc in the front and a 240 mm rear disc. Suspension in front is a telescopic type and the rear has a mono shock.

Yamaha FZ vs Suzuki Gixxer: Price

Yamaha FZ comes at a price tag of INR 83,670 and the Gixxer is priced between  INR 79,475 for the STD version and INR 80,493 for the rear disc version (both ex-showroom Bangalore).

Conclusion

FZ’s competition has arrived and we can say its a brilliant one. Both these bikes are hard to choose from with how similar they are and how they act. Both the bikes are well priced, well equipped, decently powerful, handsome looking and fuel economy is almost equal. If you had a gun to my head and asked me  to choose between the two, i would choose the FZ but regret not choosing the Gixxer. All i can say here is both these machines are fantastic and value for money.
